Hence Flintloque. I imagine many of you will be familiar, at least in passing, with Alternative Armies' definitive fantasy Napoleonic wargame, but those of you who are not can read about it here.
When I think about it I have spent years skirting this game, all starting with a sighting of orcs and elves dressed like Richard Sharpe and the French at Salute one year. I've always been tempted slightly by this game. But why? Well...:
- It is different from typical medieval type fantasy
- It is skirmish (or massed, if you use Slaughterloo), which makes it cheap to get into
- There is a free 'Lite' version which is good to get you started with minimal cost
- It is still being supported after all these years by a friendly company (based upon emails with Gavin Syme)
- The various races are just so much fun and I quite like the cartoony sculpts
- I can definitely afford it if I sell a fraction of my Warhamer or Epic 40K stuff
- It has solo rules (Like the ones in the USEME rules)
- It looks like just plain good fun
Let me know what you think!
I like Flintloque... :-) and that' s all...
ReplyDeleteMarzio.
Good enough for me! I took a look at your blog. Do you think you would be posting any game reports?
DeleteSure...as soon as possible ;-)
DeleteI still have to finish to paint some Orc rifles... :-)
Marzio.
I look forward to it!
DeleteNever quite fancied Napoleonic stuff of any flavour the uniforms put me off. The mini's are rather nice though I'll have to admit.
ReplyDeleteWell, up until recently, I would have 100% agreed with you. But looking at the figures (as I have now done extensively!), they don't have the level of detail modern historic figures have, so that swung me a bit! Plus, being a skirmish kind of game, I'm thinking it won't be so bad painting a few figures at a time....
DeleteI love Flintloque and Slaughterloo I have 32 divisions for it :-) got a big game in 3 weeks over here in Australia.

Sounds good! Hope to see some kind of report afterwards maybe?
DeleteYou must be following Mr MonkeyDews blog, yes?

If I detect a flintloque player nearby.... I might not be able to resist...
Greetings, Gaj! I am indeed following the inimitable Mr MonkeyDew. In fact I am using his excellent game reports as some thing of an excuse... a 'he made me do it' kind of thing! :)
DeleteWe are still living near Birmingham (inching a few miles south west in a month or so), but if I return to the south I will be sure to let you know!
Hello Chris,
ReplyDeleteI heard my name and here I come!
I did not create Flintloque but I am most certainly responsible for its continued existence and its 3rd edition which has more material for it by a factor of ten over the original versions. Thank you for the kind words and this blog post.
While I do not have as much time for it today as I once had, lots of other Alternative Armies, 15mm.co.uk and Ion Age commitments are ongoing I adore Flintloque. Simply put it has been part of my life for fifteen years and its in my mind most days.
As a game its unique, its fun, its a lot less serious than some games I could mention. Its great value for money and its supported by a company that helps its customers as much as it can.
Latest release was last week, 5er Uhlan Centaurs, a new race and unit with five poses per ten miniatures. More to come, more soon and more later.
As for painting the uniforms. Dazzle and colour, not kaki or drab, plus who knows what colour an Orc Line Infantry buttons were; its up to the players. Now..how often does a game say that to you!

Hi Gavin
DeleteThanks for taking the time to comment! I'll probably drop you an email if any questions occur to me later.
It's funny, sort of, how I've ended up working my way to Flintloque, all starting with a small purchase from 15mm.co.uk, which then led to a few less small purchases and discovery of te rather neat sci-fi ranges, your blog, the connection to Alternative Armies and then the ongoing existence of Flintloque!
Chris
Missed this the first time around, but I see you have had loads of replies, so I will add just one comment.
ReplyDelete"I'm not sure there is another game system that gives so you so much fun - I mean FUN with a capital F for Freddy."
Enjoy.
Tony
That's what I'm thinking! And you know from my other post that it didn't take too much for me to place a large order to get the fun started!
