For Valon!

My recent sale on eBay of my Epic 40k collection turned out to be quite, well.... epic! Among other things I was able to indulge myself with a fairly large purchase of Flintloque rules and figures! I ordered on Wednesday last week and the package arrived the Wednesday afterwards. I collected it this morning as it was (sensibly) sent by signed for delivery.

The box was rather large and weighty. Enough to make it extra fun and exciting to open!

The box contents.... The Catalucia starter set, 3 limited edition characters, the Grapeshotte expansion rules and a small, but very heavy, pile of lead. Much is camouflaged against the background by very careful and thoughtful wrapping of individual figures in bubble wrap. The contents overall was very well packed and I was very pleased with the care taken!

The starter set box shows what you get inside. The side of me which likes things to remain perfect was disappointed that the box was quite flimsy and the paper cover was not a full card sleeve and taped on at the back.... but then the sensible side of me remembered that, once opened, I would never put the figures back inside again and so I cracked on with opening it!

Well, what a pleasant surprise! Inside the box was robust polystyrene containing figures wrapped in bubblewrap. Perfect packing! Also included are the rulebook, two dice, bases for the figures and a double-sided sheet designed to get you started with a guide to the figures and three scenarios.

6 elves are included in the box. The mounted one has a separate arm, it isn't broken! Pictures never seem to do these figures justice, but they are wonderfully large and chunky.

The six ratmen. Again, managing to look much tinier than in real life, even though I included a tape measure to help show their size. Ah well, I tried. Next time I should include some other figures for comparison...

Other bits. Two ten sided dice (the game uses a percentage based system). Bases for the figures made from MDF. Different from the usual plastic slotted bases and I quite like them.

Below are the Limited Edition figures I got as part of my order. I'll go into more detail on these in future posts.

From left to right: The artist Goyah (with Todoroni noble), Orc Chaplain, Foul Mouthed Freddy. Can't wait to give these some extra special painting attention.

I started to photograph the other figures, but the light wasn't good enough for close up work, as you can see by the Todoroni infantry above. Still, plenty of time to blog about all the rest later.

And just to show I didn't order figures at random, here is the very useful planning diagram I put together to aid my purchasing choices.

And on that note, I shall leave you! I'm looking forward to much more Flintloque related blogging in the near future!

  1. Splendid acquisition Sir! I quite agree regarding the fine packing of AA boxes as well as the heft of the figures themselves. Always enjoy opening the box with all the little boxes inside. It's like Crimbo.

Looking forward to reading about your progress with this project!

    1. Thank you, Sir! I thought you might enjoy it. Initially it was going to be a much longer post, but tiredness and a lack of good lighting scuppered that plan. Still, no harm in prolonging the fun, and why post naked lead when I can update after I've painted something new?!

  2. Is that really a planning diagram or was that just an epileptic fit upon which you drew two chickens and a cannon?

    Nice haul, by the way.

If you like that sort of thing, of course. I can't see the appeal of Napoleonic elves. Not in the least but interested, actually. Not a jot. No sir. You'll come to your senses soon enough. Until then, I shan't read a single post regarding these chaps. No, really. Don't look at me like that...

    1. Oh, Gaj! Where to begin?! For a start my wife says my artisty is of the finest sort, so it must be true! Secondly, they are obviously Dodos, of the kind the hobgoblins either ride or strap barrels of gunpowder to... Chickens?! My, my!

Finally, yes, that is a most accurately rendered cannon.

Part of me wonders why we find it very easy to accept fantasy races in a medieval setting, but not in any other (aside from maybe the Shadowrun RPG). Well, pah to that, I say!

But fear not, I will be posting about my other miniature adventures as usual!

    2. Well you can't please everyone and its just as well. I like that everyone has individual tastes otherwise we would all just play the same wargame system again, again, again.

    3. Well, let's be fair and say that Gaj does have some very good taste. He just prefers his Orcs and Elves to be proper oldschool. :)

    4. Oh dear! Please don't misunderstand me - perhaps I've not done enough to render my sarcasm.

What I'm trying to intimate (as I've mentioned to Chris on an earlier post) is that I'm pretending not to be interested, because I'm very, very interested. Especially because of the exploits of Mr MonkeyDew over there on the other side.

The problem I have is that if I go an start buying a whole new game system with a new range of figures, my wife will put me in hospital...

Also, Its taken me 3 years just to get two players within driving distance to play WFB3 - if I take the plunge with Flintloque and Slaughterloo - well...

Anyway, to be clear, I will be watching with utter fascination, the progress of your army(ies).

Cheers for the 'taste', Mr Chris!

    5. Ah.... I was a little surprised and read your post a couple of times to check. I think it was too early in the morning for it to register properly in my brain! No harm done, it is quite obvious now I look back at it! :)

    6. Well *I* appreciated Gaj's heavy dose of sarcasm. Maybe I am just optimistic that way : )

Damn that ocean. There should be a tunnel and a bullet train so we can all get together on a semi regular basis!

BTW Chris, I quite enjoyed your dodo diagram. Knew what they were straight off : )

    7. One day there may be! Or perhaps a more convenient and cost effective form of air travel!

Pleased you enjoyed the dodo diagram! I mentioned this to my beloved wife and she said "Yeah, but why has no one said they can't read a word you've written." No pleasing some! :/

  3. Always a good feeling to obtain a package like this, isn't it :-) ?

    1. It is indeed! And an extra good feeling to have obtained it by 'trading in' unused figures!

My only fear is that the project will stall, but as I've roped a mate into collecting too, that should not be a problem.

  5. Chris, the Catalucia boxed set was my starter for Flintloque too. I've nearly finished painting up the miniatures (only the Esprit De Garde Curassier remains to be done).

Since then I've bought loads more of the different Flintloque ranges which I should probably do some more posts on my own blog about. Enjoy painting them as I find these figures among the easiest to paint that I've bought.

    1. So far every figure has been a pleasure to unpack, so I know where you are coming from. Hoping to kick the painting into high gear (around the minor obstacle of moving house!)

  7. A great little post. I know from personal experience how much fun there is to be got from opening a parcel from Alternative Armies.

I look forward to seeing them painted.

As far as the written (drawn) plan is concerned, I see you have made a very common mistake and included 2 x %"*'s instead of the more usual 3. Please don't feel bad, it is a common novices mistake and one that is easily remedied. Although top marks for including Foul Mouth Freddy.

    Have fun (I do).

    1. Hi Tony. Those notes were such a mess even I can't figure out what you are referring two. If it is the Xs coming out of the Catalucia starter set circle, then they are representative of the two volumes I was not buying with my first order. Although I bought ken just today, so you can see how far that idea got me. Or you might be referring to the marks my the rather artistic interpretation of a mounted elf, which served to indicate an additional two I was buying so the one from the starter wouldn't be charging in on his lonesome.

Of anything else needs interpreting, I'd be happy to take a stab at it, but I hope this shows them as less of an error of judgement! ;)

    2. Damn auto correct! I didn't buy Ken at all. I bought 'one' of the books. Sigh.

    3. I just knew Ken could not be bought! Stout fellow he.
