Nothing should get in the way of a good game!
Recently I finally acquired a hardcopy of Hordes of the Things from a good friend and was immediately beset by thoughts of epic campaigns, huge battles and creating army lists for the setting of the classic Lone Wolf gamebooks. I have wanted to refight the battle of Cetza for ages (see map below) and this has extended to thinking of army lists for each of the major nations (plus who hasn't read the books and wanted to field Banedon's flying ship in battle?!).
So, naturally this is all a bit ambitious at the moment, especially as my fund for figures lies at exactly zero right now. The side effect of this could be that the HotT rules get added to the pile and forgotten about, but no! I decided this was not good enough. Thus, with the help of the Junior General, I rapidly assembled generic good and evil fantasy armies.
Sure, it isn't the best looking game and I haven't even painted or flocked the bases yet, but a game is a game and Hordes of the Things deserves to be played!
Great idea, at least you can test it and see if you like it before investing in figures and valuable painting time etc.
ReplyDeleteHi Simon. Exactly my thinking, well, I know I like the rules already, but at least it 'keeps me busy' rather than just being money spent on another book I won't use for months if not years!
DeleteWord! I'm currently thinking of doing something very similar with Warmaster, since I certainly don't have the time or the cake to get minis for that.
ReplyDeleteI thought I might sketch up some hand drawn 20*40mm cardboard rectangles to represent the units, and use 28mm figures to represent the generals in an abstract,'big man'way.
Can't wait for the report. (There will be a report, right?)
Ah yes, Warmaster. I bought those rules when they came out but never had the money for the figures. In fact I think I have some card figures which I was doing something similar with. I'm almost certain I recall a card dwarf flame cannon... Maybe they are still out there if GWs IP police haven't shut them down!
DeleteCetza is a long way off, so don't hold your breath for a report... At the moment it might be a project requiring a blog of its own, especially if I collect armies for lots of the nations...
I loved the Battle of Cetza section - Dungeons of Torgar wasn't it? Definitely look forward to a report on this - minis or paper figs.
ReplyDeleteYup, Torgar was the one. I'll have to mull over the project for a bit and see what I come up with!
DeleteActually, it does not look bad. I just prefer all of my paper figures to be side views so that I can play from one of two sides and everything looks right. With infantry on front/back views and cavalry and artillery on side views I just don't like it.
ReplyDeleteBut that is me.
Patrick Crusaiu (can't remember how to spell his name) has great side view figures and a lot of people have built off of his masters.
Hi Dale. Thanks for your comments (it always surprises me which type of posts garner the greatest response!).
DeleteI agree with you totally about the side/front view issue. That is the main source of frustration for me when selecting figures. I'll see if I can find Patrick's figures, so thanks for that.
